Promising Computer Trends in Road Vehicles
You start to realize how ubiquitous computer technology has grown when you realize its right there staring at you when driving your car to or from the office. You have your GPS navigational unit that talks to you with its spoken turn-by-turn directional guidance. Your music player on the dash is also a computer decoding the millions of bits on your mp3 files to deliver the music in your car.
It’s not enough that the office teems with servers, laptops and desktop PCs every where you turn. At home, your kid is right in front of one playing games. And most likely you get home to see you spouse banging on the keys in the kitchen to get the cooking done from the PC.
The computer knows no scared place, and it never will. Even your privacy is fair game for computers. With its ability to process data from sensors in your car, controlling cabin temperatures displaying information on the dashboard, car makers just can’t get away with it.
Without a doubt, computers have taken nearly 50% of the onus in maintaining and driving your car. If makers can create a driverless car, then you know your car is now 100% computer-driven.
Computers monitor your engine and get it repaired
At the end of the day, you just get a file or readout of how your engine is, how much carbon emission released into the atmosphere, and where you need to get it fixed. In the future, the ECU processor you find today in just about all modern vehicles would most likely communicate wirelessly over WiFi or WiMax to an authorized service center to get you new car parts ready to replace worn out or failed parts of the engine. It might even start debiting your bank account to get the service center paid as well.
Car fuel level sensors can feed your remaining fuel loads to the car’s central processor to communicate with the next gasoline or hydrogen station to automatically fill your car with the right amounts the next time you get there and all via WiFi!
Augmented Reality on the Windscreen
The technology for AR is not entirely new as this is now explored for possible new engineering application for the man on the street – or inside the car. Heads up display technology or HUD has been used in fighter jets since in the late 80s like the F-15 Eagle or the F-18 Hornet. But they are crude and data needed by the pilot is often just projected on a small screen on the windshield that they term as HUD. Within a few years, expect more evolved computer systems in cars and SUVs to sport the same HUD but using AR or augmented reality technologies.
AR is a more practical application of virtual reality and is composed of 50% real images as you see them head-on with superimposed computer generated information. It’s basically sensor based with a small camera to read images registered in the digital CMOS. Depending on the application you choose. the computer takes data from, say a satellite GPS and gets it superimposed real time on the screen or in the case of a car, the windshield so you don’t have to turn your head to look at a display. It’s safer driving that way. GP
